Louth Bay – Poonindie – North Shields – Port Lincoln – Billy Light’s Point

Black Stump Poonindie

Black Stump Poonindie

I left Louth Bay this morning, through Poonindie and the Black Stump (I’ve finally gone beyond the Black Stump!!!!)

I’m headed for Port Lincoln to check it out and see if I can get a mechanic to look at the fan belt squeal and the water tanks – have to wait until tomorrow morning so I set out to a lookout that my new Garmin GPS has found – Winter’s Hill Lookout.  One word – Stunning!!  It has 360 degree views of the town, harbour, islands and across the back are the farmlands. It has an emergency tower and I can see why its situated here. Once I have a good look I’m off to the Information Centre to see what else Port Lincoln has to offer.  The council offers $10 per night motorhome parking at Billy Light’s Point so I take them up on the offer, and go to check out the campsite, via the town scenic drive. Billy Light’s is set on a great cove and the town is to the west.

The town is set on a magnificent bay – Boston Bay. The foreshore walk is just brilliant – complete with the Makybe Diva Statue in the parkland.  The walking path follows the coastline around and is very extensive – The walk is into town from here and beyond to North Shields. The CBD is vibrant and busy, with good services – lots of tourists starting to get around.  The shopping is spread out around the CBD – not in a complex, but within an eight block radius – easy to get around on foot.

I explored the Lincoln Cove Marina and was amazed at the size of the boats in the fishing fleet – they are massive and the wharf was a hive of activity – loading and getting ready for the day’s fishing.  I was enthralled by the pallets of frozen bait fish being loaded onto the boats.  The marina is full of yachts and there are a few fishermen on the wharf catching salmon.

There are tours available, cage diving with Great White Sharks, swimming with the tuna and sea lions, seafood tours – lots to see and do if money wasn’t an issue.  I’m happy just to explore on foot as there is heaps to see.

I headed to the campsite and set up then went for a walk around the point with a local lady – the walk takes you to the old BHP Shipbuilding yards and return – a couple of kilometres of great scenery.  I’m sitting in a BBQ area cooking my dinner and catching my diary up – watching the fishing boats return to harbour – Magic. I’m looking forward to seeing the town light up across the bay – some Queenslanders in the camp told me it’s spectacular.
