Quorn – Stirling North – Port Augusta – Whyalla – Campsite near Moonamble

Pichi Richi Bridge

Pichi Richi Bridge

After bidding both Quorn families bye, I headed to Stirling North via Pichi Richi Range to catch up with Fiona Booth and was lucky enough to see Ted and Shane Stewart. It was nice to catch up with Fiona at last and after a cuppa and chat I headed to Port Augusta to see Shirley Crombie, who I haven’t seen for many years.  A neighbour from my childhood – we had a lot to tell each other and time flew by before I had to head off to explore the Eyre Peninsula. Before leaving Port I checked out the wharf area – the beautification of the waterfront is quite effective – they have incorporated the old railway tracks and it works. The skate bowl is unusual and has many users today.

I took some time looking around Whyalla – the Information Centre is next to the Maritime Museum (both closed as its Sunday), and the HMAS Whyalla, a WW2  Corvette which stands on dry land 2 kilometres from the sea – a visit to the maritime museum includes a guided tour of the ship. I found Hummock Hill – this is a most impressive lookout and the 360 degree views are astounding. Each turn is different – the town, the ocean, the jetty, the mining buildings – all make this very remarkable and I’m glad I came up here. Spencer Gulf is quite calm and the swimming beach and marina are at the base of the hill. Queen Elizabeth visited this lookout so I’m in good company!!  There is an Anti-Aircraft Gun which was mounted to protect the conveyor belt on the Iron  ore jetty, from which the steel that Australia’s defence depended upon in the Second World War – a sobering reality check. The town is very quiet because it’s Sunday so I can easily check out the streetscape without holding up the traffic. It’s quite late when I head south towards Cowell, through coastal saltbush shrubby country – I decide to stay at a truck stop just past the Kimba turnoff as I don’t want to risk the kangaroos in the dusk.
